Charles Edward Hicks, Sr. was welcomed into the Kingdom of Heaven on Friday, September 14, 2018. He was 71 years young. Charles was born at his home in Maury City, Tennessee, the child of Burnice Hicks and Norma Ray Midgett Hicks. Charles is survived by his loving wife of 50 plus years Sandra (Taylor) Hicks. The second of seven brothers, Charles was preceded in death by his brothers, Nolen Hicks (Thelma) and James Midgett (Margaret). Surviving Charles are his brothers, John (Mary), Michael (Bernetta), Solomon (Regina) and Willie (Shirley).

Charles is the father of two children, Kimberly Hicks Lewis (William) and Charles Edward Hicks, Jr. (Connie). Kimberly preceded her father in death. He is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, Charlize, Charles Ethan, Christina, Camryn, Grant, Hamilton, Konner, Harper, Isiah, Graceson, Zachary and Kathleen. 

Charles was a ‘country boy’ at heart, he grew up farming and loved the outdoors. He graduated from Central High School in Alamo, TN, in 1965. After high school, Charles attended Tennessee State University graduating with a bachelor’s degree in plant sciences. While attending college, Charles served his country in Vietnam as a U.S. Army paratrooper earning a Silver Star. Upon his return from Vietnam, Charles eventually began his tenure at CSX Transportation, rising to become Director of Environmental Operations for the entire East Coast. Charles worked for CSX for 30 plus years.

An active member of the Phillip R. Cousin A.M.E. Church, Charles served as a protem, steward, and with the Sons of Allen for several years. Charles was also an advisor on the construction and design of the new worship center built in 2006. A great philanthropist, Charles was involved with programs such as Habitat for Humanity and UCOM. Charles was the epitome of excellence and class, a loving husband, father, granddaddy, a great provider for his family, role model, and a devout man of God. Charles will be missed so much by his family, friends and former colleagues.

Two services will be held to celebrate the amazing life of Charles Edward Hicks, Sr. The Jacksonville Celebration of Life will beginning at Phillip R. Cousin A.M.E. Church with a viewing Thursday, September 20, 2018 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. The Celebration of Life funeral service will be Friday, September 21, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. The Tennessee Celebration will begin with a viewing at Bucks Chapel in Halls, TN Monday, September 24, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon with a funeral celebration directly following the viewing.
