Carol Sue McDermon Massey was born October 12, 1940 at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, to E.C. and Loise McDermon. She graduated from Robert E. Lee High School, class of 1958.
Sue became an interior designer and owned her own business on Cassett Avenue in Jacksonville.
Sue and Richard C. Massey (class of 1957 at Robert E. Lee) were married at Murray Hill Presbyterian Church on August 7, 1975, by Reverend Clyde Wray. They both had been christened in the same church as babies and grew up there as well.
Sue and Dick went together steadily as teenagers, but broke up in 1958, when she was a senior, and they married other people. When they met 17 years later, Sue had a son from her previous marriage, Michael Craig Marshall, and Dick had a daughter, Karen Maria, and son, Richard Massey, from his previous marriage. Sue and Dick met up again at Dick’s mother’s funeral in June 1975. Their meeting again was a new beginning of a love affair and marriage that lasted the rest of their lives. They had a son together, Richard Paul Massey, born in Saginaw, Michigan, on August 25, 1976.
Sue died at Haven Hospice in Orange Park, Florida, from an incurable liver cancer, with Richard by her side. She will always remain his lifelong friend and love, forever.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at St. Andrews Presbyterian, 6317 103rd Street, Jacksonville, FL 32210.
