Mr. Hawkins was born in New Orleans, Louisiana (NOLA), the oldest son of seven siblings, to Arimetha and John Hawkins, Sr., that are both deceased and whom he loved dearly. He was baptized Baptist at age eight, sang in the choir and served as a youth usher.
He was educated by Orleans Parish Public Schools, Louisiana State University at Baton Rouge, Computer Technology Institute of Greater New Orleans, the United States Navy, the University of San Francisco, Jones College at Jacksonville, Florida, and earned his A+ and Webmaster certifications at the University of North Florida.
Mr. Hawkins retired after two separate 20-year careers in aviation. First, he retired from the United States Navy as a decorated veteran, having served during both the Vietnam and Gulf Wars. While serving our country, his wife and children relocated with each permanent change of station orders. After his second 20-year aviation career, he retired from Northrop-Grumman Corporation as an Aeronautical Senior Documentation Inspector in St. Augustine, Florida.
His volunteer services included working with Girl Scouts of America in Pensacola, Florida; the Gateway Girl Scouts Council in Jacksonville, Florida; Bethel Baptist Institutional Church’s first Girl Scout Troop as the driver, tent pitcher and photographer; Boys Scouts of America at the Naval Station Treasure Island in San Francisco, California. At his last Navy Command, he volunteered with MWR (Morale, Well-Being, Recreation) at NAS Alameda, California. After returning to Florida’s First Coast, Mr. Hawkins helped launch Bethel’s first website, implemented and maintained updates for his church, his children’s associations with Duval County Public Schools, and the University of North Florida’s Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority.
Finally, we share quotes Mr. Hawkins wrote about his goals and his religious aspirations:
“To be the best parent and husband, I dedicate a lot of my time and energy to my wife and children. I believe children need guidance and a good role model to succeed in life. I intend to stay close to my children and be there to help them make decisions. The time spent sharing life experiences, educating and directing my children will always remain special to me. I hope and pray that one day I will be able to serve God and Jesus Christ the way it was intended.”
