DeVon Leroy Russell was born on August 18, 1975, at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to Chester Russell and Francine Sutton. During his time with us, he put smiles on the faces of many and had no problem letting people know that it was a pleasure to meet him.
After graduating from Hayfield High in Alexandria, VA, he began taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College before finally deciding to join the United States Air Force. While on active duty he earned numerous awards and received accolades for the work he performed in Law Enforcement. As a member of the Security Forces Squadron, he defended military bases both stateside and aboard in North Carolina, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. After separating in 1999, he perfected his love for photography by taking courses and receiving several certifications in the field. It wasn’t long before he became the CEO and founder of Desired Images and Photo capturing the lives of many in the Rainbow State of Hawaii. Upon returning to the mainland, DeVon found refuge as an active member of the New Life International Worship Center under the late and great Pastor Douglas Compton and his extraordinary wife Pastor Sherell Compton. As a member of the choir and the men’s ministry, he looked for any opportunity that would allow him to extend a helping hand.
Shortly after moving to Fleming Island, he became a Regional Dispatcher for the Federal Government. He was in the process of mastering the job when he was diagnosed with cancer. Unable to return to his position, he took up gardening as a way to decompress and redirect his focus. Discovering his talent and passion for making things grow, he started his very own YouTube channel, AWheelLifeGardener. Spreading a wealth of knowledge to his family, friends, and viewers.
On July 28, 2024, DeVon’s soul went home to be with the Lord after fighting a courageous battle. Although his journey was rough, he remained optimistic, faithful, and always in good spirit. A loving husband, father, brother, son, and friend, DeVon’s love for life will continue to live on through those he touched with his amazing words of wisdom, quick witted remarks, one-of-a kind personality, and keen sense of humor.
He is preceded by his father Chester Russell, grandmother Sarah Sutton, great grandmother, Maxine Smith, and mother-in-law Glenda Smith.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife, LaTrina; sons, Davian and Devin; his loving mother, Francine Sutton; brothers, Damon Matthews, Jaymell Russell, Chester Russell Jr., Quartez Adams and Anthony Arnold; sisters Shelly Adams and LaTonya Jackson; nephews DeLonte’ Sutton, Monte’ Russell, Marquis Dolford, Azziah Russell, Kozy “Kai” Russell, Charlie Russell, and Johnnie Earp; nieces Jonishia Earp, Jamece Hall, Lauryn Reese, Nevaeh Russell and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and close friends.
While our hearts mourn the loss of our family member and friend, we take comfort in knowing that he is at peace alongside our Heavenly Father.
May you find eternal rest DeVon, for you are forever in our hearts.
