Doris Irvin Obituary

Doris Bridges Irvin passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 84, in Orange Park, FL. She was born March 22, 1939, in Savannah, GA, to the late Victoria Beasley Turnbow and Theodore Bridges. She was raised by her late mother, Victoria, and her beloved late stepfather, Homer Turnbow.

Doris grew up in Oak Ridge, TN, and graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1956. Prior to having children, she worked as a bookkeeper and she always had a knack for numbers. Outside work, her most frequent use case of this skill was applied to shopping. She could calculate percentages off like no one else.

Doris was generous, kind and witty. In addition to her family, she valued her closest friendships tremendously. She loved to read and share books with others. She also fashioned herself a bit of a writer, and even took some creative writing courses at community college. She was a formidable and ruthless Scrabble player. She loved sewing, especially quilting, and loved sharing her quilts with others. She was deeply religious throughout her life, and in many ways, her faith defined her. Doris’ life was also characterized by paradoxes. She was frugal yet loved to shop. She fiercely valued her independence yet asked for help constantly from those around her. She loved dessert (especially chocolate) and enthusiastically shared it with others yet maniacally counted all grams of sugar consumed by herself and others.

Perhaps most of all, Doris loved Christmas and hosting the annual family Christmas Eve party. In fact, after her death, it was discovered that her closet was filled with wrapped Christmas gifts intended for her family and loved ones.

Throughout Doris’ life, the number three was a consistent and meaningful theme. She was one of three children. In addition, she married three times, and the third time was a charm. She wed William Andrew Irvin at the age of 33 on June 10, 1972. They had three children, Jenny Irvin Vidrine, born in 1973, and Amy Elizabeth LaPierre and April Diane Irvin, twins, born in 1977. Continuing the theme of three, she was a wonderful grandmother to three grandchildren, Sydney Marie LaPierre, 19, born to Amy and Scott LaPierre; Beckett Drew Vidrine, 13, born to Jenny and Damon Vidrine; and Alexander Irvin Douglas, 4, born to April Irvin and Eric Allen Douglas.

Doris was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, William Andrew “Andy” Irvin, who died August 19, 2014, and her brother, Morrie Bridges.

She is survived by her sister, Carolyn (Art) Bridges Andersen, and her three daughters and their families. She is also survived by cherished friends. Doris lived a rich and full life until the very end.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at St. Giles Presbyterian Church, 116 Foxridge Road, Orange Park, FL 32065. Services entrusted to Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, (904) 264-1233.
