On July 17, 1945, in Waycross Georgia, Alvin Armstrong, Jr. was born to Alvin and Essie Mae Armstrong. He was the seventh of thirteen children.  His family relocated to Fort Pierce,  FL where he attended the local schools.

Alvin enjoyed the normal rigors of youth in south Florida such as fishing, foraging, hunting, and swimming. He earned wages harvesting fruit and vegetables during the summer.   Alvin began to take  greater interest in academics and band. He played the snare and tympani drums and performed in the school’s concert and marching bands. He was an outstanding percussionist and recipient  of  a scholarship to Florida A& M University.

During a revival  run by Elder John Robinson, on July 21, 1963, Alvin received salvation.  Alvin served as drummer and junior deacon in his local church under Elder John Robinson’s leadership. He drove for Elder Robinson and the visiting Bishop throughout the Florida East Coast District until he began his tour of service in Vietnam.

Upon returning from Vietnam, Alvin continued to serve under Elder Robinson.  He relocated to Daytona Beach, Florida to attend college at Bethune-Cookman University.  He  then began service under Elder Neo Garvin and later, Elder Charles McKnight.
