He was an outstanding percussionist and recipient of a scholarship to Florida A& M University.

He drove for Elder Robinson and the visiting Bishop throughout the Florida East Coast District until he began his tour of service in Vietnam.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Alvin continued to serve under Elder Robinson. He relocated to Daytona Beach, Florida to attend college at Bethune-Cookman University. He then began service under Elder Neo Garvin and later, Elder Charles McKnight.
