Elizabeth "Beth" Havens Obituary

Elizabeth “Beth” Kay Havens, 70, passed away on September 22, 2025 in Jacksonville, FL.  She was born a fraternal twin on January 19, 1955 in Madison, WI to the late Dr. Thomas Allin, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Allin.

Beth’s family settled in Park Ridge, Illinois when she was very young.  She would grow up there, and was shaped by many of events that took place in the ‘60s and ‘70s.  Beth attended Illinois State University and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree.  Majoring in psychology, she would later develop an interest in social work.  She moved to Madison, WI, and took a year off so she could meet the requirements for in-state tuition, work to save money, and attend graduate school.  Beth earned a Master of Science Social Work from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  Upon graduation, she worked at various nursing homes and homes for troubled teens before being hired by the federal government.

Beth worked for the U.S. Navy as a civilian Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) for 34 years.  She began her career in Beaufort, South Carolina, and ended her career at the Naval Hospital, N.A.S. Jacksonville.  During her career, Beth served in many different roles in the mental health profession.  She worked in Navy hospitals, Family Service Centers, and an Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Beth served two separate tours at Naval Station, Rota Spain.  It was her favorite place to live and work.

Beth met her husband, Douglas Havens, while serving as the hospital Social Worker at Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain during her first tour.  After dating for a time, they were married in Gibraltar.  She became an instant mother to Doug’s two young children, a role she cherished until her death.

Among the many things Beth enjoyed in life were traveling Europe and the United States, riding on the back of Doug’s Harley Davidson, and attending social and sporting events. She had recently completed a local Master Gardner Program. Beth loved being a grandmother to her three grandchildren the most.  She loved being called “Mama” and giving tons of kisses to all of them.

Beth is preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Tomas Allin, Jr. and Mary Elizabeth Allin.

She is survived by her loving husband of nearly 33 years, Douglas Havens; children, Andrew Havens and Heather Johnson; grandchildren, Jacob Johnson, Ethan Havens, and Kori Havens; her twin brother, William Allin; older brother, Thomas Allin, III and sister, Mary “Peggy” Swan, and many nieces and nephews.
