Retired USN Commander Gloria Hyatt Henderson, born July 15, 1952, preceded by her parents, John and Mary Hyatt, led a life marked by grace and resilience. Born in North Carolina and a proud graduate of Albemarle High School, Gloria was the eldest daughter of a large and vibrant family. She earned her Diploma in Nursing from the Presbyterian School of Nursing in Charlotte in 1973, the same year she married her beloved husband, John Henderson and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy.
Gloria’s naval career spanned the globe. While balancing service and family life, she served with distinction as an Operating Room Nurse and Charge Nurse. She loved traveling the world in search of the perfect find, and above all, she found the greatest joy in her family.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 52 years, Captain (USN) John Henderson; her daughter, Captain (USAF) Andrea “Nikki” Henderson; and her son, Colonel (USAF) John “Jay” Henderson (Lee). She was the doting grandmother of Dash and Elliot.
Gloria also leaves behind her siblings: Larry (Sandra) Mauney, Jackie Hyatt, Deborah (Jackie) Lilly, Ronald (Kathleen) Hyatt, Alvin (Laura) Hyatt, Angela Hyatt, and Norma Thomas. Her legacy lives on through 16 nieces and nephews, as well as many great-nieces and great-nephews. Her heart and home were also defined by her Goddaughter, Victoria; her “God-Grandchildren,” John, Malcolm, and Anthony (Alyssa); and her “Great-God-Grandson,” AJ.
Gloria was truly loved by all who crossed her path. Her profound legacy of love extends through the many lives she touched, the patients she treated, and the family she adored. She will be deeply missed, but forever remembered for her strength, her elegance, and her generous heart.
