Irma Gibson Obituary

Mrs. Irma Jean Hill-Gibson was born on July 5, 1944, in the city of Jacksonville, Florida. She was the youngest daughter of the late Deacon Daniel Hill and Mrs. Thelma Curry-Hill. She was the devoted wife of Eddie Lee Gibson, Esquire, for 41 years. She was the beloved sister of Brenda Joyce Kohn.

Mrs. Gibson, affectionally known as Jean and Aunt Jean, was a faithful member of Greater Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, where she served in many capacities. Jean was a Sunday School Teacher, an active member of Usher’s Board #2 and the Pastor’s Aide Board.

She enjoyed traveling. Major highlights included: a trip to Italy and Spain, a weekend girls trip with her sister and nieces to Palm Coast, Hammock Beach Resort, spending time with family for birthdays, holidays and other occasions. Her other favorite past times included baking cakes — she was famous for her carrot cakes and pound cakes. She loved studying the word of God and loved her church family. Her favorite TV show was PBS’ Downton Abbey. Mrs. Gibson will be remembered and greatly missed for her sincere kindness and her caring nature.

Jean was a graduate of New Stanton High School, class of 1962; Florida Memorial College in St. Augustine, Florida, on May 30, 1967; and obtained her master’s from Florida A & M University. After graduating, she taught Elementary School in Haines City, Florida; Duval County, and Houston, Texas, before retiring from Duval County. Professor Gibson was nominated for Duval County Public Schools’ Teacher of the Year on two occasions. Mrs. Gibson was a kind, loving teacher and mentor, who was loved by her co-workers, parents and students. She was a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, as well as the National Education Association and Duval Teachers United.

Mrs. Gibson leaves to cherish her memory, her husband, Eddie Gibson, Esq.; devoted loving sister, Brenda Kohn; four nieces, Olivia Kohn-House (Paul), Judy Kohn, Natalie Kohn-Spikes (Derrick) and Nicole Kohn-Coronado; two nephews, Mark Kohn, Sr. (Staci) and William Kohn, III (Yolanda); cousins, Bernice Scott Kohn, James Scott (Gloria), Betty Young (Alfred), Beverly Williams, and Diane White; brothers-in-law, Clarence Gibson, Randy Gibson and Charles Gibson, Jr.; grandnieces, Franchesca Kohn, Alexis Kohn, Arrington Kohn, Madison Kohn, Nikayla Coronado, Jaelyn Benyard, Joslyn Benyard Graham (Ronnie) and Sydney Roundtree; grandnephews, Mark Kohn Jr., Myles Kohn, Malachi Kohn, Morgan Drew Kohn, Santiago Coronado, Jr. and William Coronado; great-niece, Isabella Kohn; great-nephew, Ronnie Graham, Jr.; niece and nephew, Veronica Brown (Larry) and Carl Kohn, Jr.; goddaughters, Gail Hayes and Tiffany Williams, along with a host of sorrowing relatives and friends.
