James Andrew Smith passed away on September 1, 2020 in Orange Park, FL. He was born on June 15, 1944 in Springfield, IL to the late Howard Jay Smith and Mary Louise Burnett Smith.
He graduated from Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, VA and worked in the railway industry for B&O, Chesssie System and CSX rail systems for a total of 36 years. He was a member of several railroad historical societies, RABO (Retired Administrator of B&O) and R&LHS (Railway and Locomotive Historical Society). His hobby was model railroad trains. He served 16 years on the Clay County Planning and Zoning Board and worked with Junior Achievement. James served as a volunteer at Thrasher Horne Center for the Arts and was a platelet donor. James was also a member of Highpoint Community Church in Orange Park, FL.
James is preceded in death by his parents,Howard J. and Mary Louise Smith, grandparents, Jay Smith and Cynthia Ballard Smith, and brother-in-law, Alan Devers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ann Woore Smith; children, Melinda Granlund, (Luke) and Matthew Woore Smith (Sara Brown); grandchildren, Wyatt James Granlund, Deacon Redd Granlund, and Collin Daniel Brown; brother, Howard Lee Smith (Joyce); sister, Mary Ellen Smith Parks (Jay), and sister-in-law, Barbara Woore Devers; nephews, Craig Rice and Donald Rice; niece, Hollie Rice Einolf; cousin, Harold Smith (Shirley); and many friends.
A memorial celebration was held on Sunday, September 6, 2020. Interment will be at a later date in Winchester, VA.
