Janie Mae Murphy greeted our world to begin her life journey on December 9, 1936 in Barnwell, South Carolina. She is the daughter to James and Lucille Wiggins Murphy. Her family relocated to Jacksonville, Florida, as she was still a young child. Janie attended the public schools of Duval County and graduated from Matthew W. Gilbert High School in 1955. She continued her education at Florida CC Jacksonville Community College.
Janie M. Murphy and Joseph W. Lewis were joined in marriage in 1976. They resided for some time in both Providence, Rhode Island and Norfolk, Virginia, as Joseph was serving active military duty. Janie worked in retail for many years including employment with the leading May Cohens and Ivey’s Department Stores in Jacksonville. She also served in the social services arena with Jacksonville Health Department. After several years, Janie retired from Neumors Children Clinic.
Sister Janie Murphy Lewis accepted Jesus Christ as her personal savior at a young age. She became a member of Mount Vernon Missionary Baptist Church in the early sixties and served as a faithful member for many years until failing health. Some of the ministries with which she served include Sunday School, vacation Bible School, usher board, missionary society, the Golden Age ministry, and as a youth counselor. Her light shined brightly and with soft laughter.
Those to cherish her memory are: a loving husband, Joseph W.
