Johnnie Lee Lester, a strong and compassionate soul, was born on August 25, 1946, in Lake City, Florida, to the late Jesse Coon and Josie Hart Lester. He was one of twelve children born into a home rooted in faith, discipline, and love. Raised with strong family values, Johnnie developed a work ethic and sense of purpose early in life that would carry him through a lifetime of service and adventure.
At just 13 years old, Johnnie began working to support others, displaying the same responsibility and generosity that would later define his adult life. As a young man, he became a Longshoreman, where he traveled the world and discovered his passion for cooking. It was there he honed his culinary skills, eventually becoming a seasoned chef, respected and loved by many.
Over the span of more than two decades, Johnnie worked across the globe, sharing not only his talent but also his heart. Later, he brought his entrepreneurial vision to life by opening his own business—continuing his mission of service and leadership. Honorable, humble, and respected, Johnnie was truly a man among men.
He was a faithful and devoted member of Historic Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, where he found strength, community, and spiritual growth.
Johnnie is survived by his loving children: Gabriel Brown (Lisa), Johnnie Lee Lester Jr. (Tyiesha), Monique K. Haynes (Jeremy) and Ian Skrine; and a host of loving grandchildren who will carry his legacy forward with pride and love.
He is also survived by his siblings: Mary Howard, Fred Lester, Joan Jones, Cozzie Wilson, Selena Pitmon, Ethel (Charles) Vaughan, Harold Hart, Annie M. Porter, and Rev. Robert Thomas (Carolyn); along with a large extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Coon and Josie Hart Lester; and siblings Frankie Lee Lester, Betty J. Evans, Robert Lester, Sr., Mae Dene Powell, James Coon, Horace Coon, Sr., Jesse Coon, Jr. and Hattie M. Corbitt.
Johnnie’s life was a testimony of faith, hard work, and love for others. His legacy of service and strength will continue to inspire all who had the honor of knowing him. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
