Mr. Joseph James passed away on March 29, 2025 in Orange Park, FL. He was born on November 17, 1934 in Frederiksted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, to the late Joseph James and Ursulina King.
Joseph married the love of his life, Wilhelmina Tisdale, on February 10, 1958. They had three sons, Ronald, Joseph (deceased) and Lennard.
Joseph attended the local Catholic Schools in St. Croix and received his B.S Degree at Edward Waters College in Jacksonville, FL. He attended Fire-Baptized Holiness Church in Penny Farms and Greater Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Jacksonville. He enjoyed reading, researching history and loved spending time with his family.
Joseph served with the United States Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, then served in the United States Navy, from 1954 to 1981. He retired and was honorably discharged as Chief Petty Officer. Joseph was employed with Sears in Orange Park, FL, FSCJ and the Urban League in Jacksonville for many years. He was also employed with the Department of Navy until 1996 when he retired.
Family members preceding Joseph in death were his parents, son, Joseph L. James and brother, Isaac E. James.
Joseph leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 67 years, Wilhelmina James; sons, Ronald James, Orlando, FL, and Lennard James, Orange Park, FL; daughter-in-law, Cynthia James, Jacksonville, FL, and sister-in-law, Lula Pearl Pearson, Columbus, OH; nine grandchildren, Cherie (Jason) Bronx, NY, Taiesha, Longville, TX, Jamel, Wesley, MD, Chaunece, Rosa and Jenese, Jacksonville, FL, and Davante and Karizma, New Jersey; thirteen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins other family members and friends; god-daughters, Carmen Jenkins and Kia Riddle and god-sons, Darryl Bryant and Travis Francis.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 8, 2025 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Greater Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, 6317 118th Street, Jacksonville, Florida 32244 and the Celebration of Life Service will be held on Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. also at Greater Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church.
