Joseph W. Lewis, Jr.

Joseph Washington Lewis, Jr., 84, passed away March 25, 2022 in Bay Pines, FL. He was born on February 21, 1938 on Jupiter Island, FL to the late Bessie L. Whaley Lewis and Joseph Washington Lewis, Sr.

Joseph attended Edward Waters College and then joined the U.S. Navy, where he retired. He also worked for May Cohens, King’s Bay, Liaison in Human Resources Management.

Joseph was a proud member of the Right Direction Church where he was a deacon as well as a member of St. James A.M.E. Church where he was a Stewart. He was also a Master Mason. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and reading.

He was preceded in death by his parents, beloved wife, Janie Murphy Lewis; sisters, Rutha Mae Cartwright and Ollie Mae Dames; paternal grandparents, Major and Jenny Russ and maternal grandmother, Minnie Kiek Weston.

Joseph is survived by his loving family, daughter, Mercedes Lewis; son, Joseph Washington Green (Tamika); sisters, Ernestine Bethel and Dr. Sheila D. Long (Billie); grandchildren, Andrea L. Lewis-Conyer, Breeanna McCoy (Stephen), Joseph Green, Jr. and Hannah Green.

Thank you to all the medical and health care personnel who provided excellent service, especially those that provided in-home care. Your care and loving kindness is deeply appreciated by the family. We wish to thank St. James A.M.E. Church for prayers and spiritual health.

In keeping with Genesis 1:28, the Lewis family is fruitful. We are blessed with a large family, and wish to acknowledge all; those who are here, and those unable to be here. There are many more; grandchildren, great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and family connections too numerous to name. We thank God for you all.

A visitation will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 11:00 a.m. both at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073, (904) 264-1233.

The family requests that those attending services for Mr. Lewis, Jr. wear masks and practice social distancing.
