Joseph Eugene Schiffer, age 90, of Orange Park, Florida, passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024, with his family by his side.
Joseph was born in Queens, New York, March 25, 1934, son of Francis and Joseph A. Schiffer of Brooklyn, New York; brother to Maureen, Eugene and James Schiffer.
Joseph married Barbara Ann Graham in 1954 in Brunswick, Georgia, while stationed at NAS Cecil Field, Jacksonville, Florida. Joseph enlisted in the United States Navy in 1950 and, together with Barbara, raised their children as a military family while assigned to several duty stations from coast to coast and internationally.
His career began with basic training at U.S. Naval Training Center Bainbridge, Maryland, and he served his country proudly for 27 years, with an additional 20 years as a civil servant at Point Mugu Naval Air Station, Ventura, California.
In retirement, Joseph served for seven years as a docent at the Ronald Reagan Library and, after returning to Jacksonville, he volunteered at Camp Blanding Museum for an additional 20 years.
He is survived by his children, Michael (Rhonda) Schiffer, Keith (Ann) Schiffer, Patricia (Scott) Ives, Steven (Amy) Schiffer, and Christopher (Amanda) Ingram; niece, Theresa Butera; 13 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. The family extends special recognition to Ms. Barbara Walter, friend and companion, who Joseph loved dearly.
A service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024 at 3:00 p.m and a visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m., until the hour of service, both at the Chapel of The High-Speed Pass-Cecil Field, 6112 POW-MIA Memorial Parkway, Jacksonville, FL 32221.
Joseph will be interred next to his wife at Jacksonville National Cemetery, Jacksonville, Florida, at a later date.
