LaVonta Schenkel Obituary

LaVonta Myrtle Hockett Schenkel of Orange Park, FL died on Sunday, August 18, 2019 at the age of 92.

LaVonta was born in Eagle City, Oklahoma on October 1, 1926 to Orville Kermit Hockett and Luella Parker Hockett.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 22 years, Warren L. McGuyrt, Jr., who died in 1974 and her husband of 34 years, Gilbert J. Schenkel, who died in 2006; son-in-law, Bobby Lee Caldwell and step-son, John Stephen Schenkel.

LaVonta lived in several states during her lifetime including Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, Colorado, California, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and North Carolina. She graduated from John C. Fremont High School in Los Angeles, California in 1944. She and her husband, Gilbert both retired from Florida Community College at Jacksonville, where they were charter employees when it was established in 1966. They enjoyed their retirement years in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina.

She loved to cook, read and fish. She had great love for our heavenly Father, her wonderful family and numerous friends.

She is survived by her daughter LaVonta Sue Caldwell; granddaughter, Luella Kathryn Caldwell; great-grandchildren, Lorelai Juliet and Cole Austin; step-children, Katharine E. Wehrmann, Susan R. Robinson and Debra Anne Sheehan; step-grandchildren, Jennifer and Ashley Wehrmann, Katharine Johnson, Kirsten Ireson, Alyce Steil, Todd Robinson, Michael and Partick Sheehan as well as many step-great-grandchildren. Also her and Gil’s “extended family”, Mike and Kathy Werhan and Robert, Loretta and Rachel Revis.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Argyle Church of Christ, 7310 Collins Road, Jacksonville, FL 32244. Her family requests that attendees wear bright colors (no dark colors).
