Chief Petty Officer (SW)(AW) (RET.) Larry Fortson was born on December 10, 1952 in Midland, GA to the late Jim and Annie Kate Fortson.
Larry was raised in Midland and Columbus, GA. He graduated in the class of 1971 from Carver “Tiger” High School in Columbus. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1971 and after 22 ½ years of distinguished service, earning several awards and ribbons, and obtaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer (SW)(AW), he was honorably discharged in 1993. He attended several local colleges. Larry was dedicated to Christ and his church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, son, Christopher Elijah, brothers, Elijah, Calvin and Alfred Fortson.
Chief Fortson leaves to cherish his memory loving ex-wife, Shelia; devoted loving children, Krystal (Eddie) and Michael (Phyllis); loving nephew, Alfred Clark; very dear friends, Paulette Kenderick, Emmanuel Alexander and Nestor White of Jacksonville, FL; grandsons, Dechane, Elijah and Isiah Fortson of Jacksonville, and Joseph Bess of TN; granddaughters, Micky (U.S. Navy) San Diego, CA, Alysia Durham, Aniya and Zariah Fortson, Camiyah Campbell of Jacksonville and Imagine Thompson of Houston, TX; sisters, Shirley Burson (Ernest), Annalisa Cuffee and Cassandra Fortson of Columbus; brothers, Ronald L. Johnson, David and Andrew Fortson of Columbus; several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law of Columbus, GA and Brooklyn Park, MN; several nieces and nephews along with other close relatives and sorrowing friends.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 23, 2020 at 10:00 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Arlington Church of Christ 6215 Arlington Road, Jacksonville, FL 32211.
