Laura was born on October 7, 1937, in Aiken, South Carolina, to the late Heyward Harold and Bessie Hays Moore. She received CHRIST at an early age at Mt. Harris Baptist Church in Aiken and was a Born-Again Believer and faithful member of The Westcoast Center for Human Development.
She was educated in the Aiken County Public Schools. Laura moved to Jacksonville, Florida, with her parents and joined Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member and served on the Usher Board. Later she joined the Westcoast Center for Human Development in Sarasota, Florida, and was a faithful member and served as a Deaconess.
Laura retired from the Duval County Public School System. She was also an outstanding volunteer with many of student school activities, especially the Band and the Football Team. After retirement, she became employed with the SOS (School of Success Academy Charter Middle School) where she was an exceptional employee until she officially retired.
Laura reconnected with and married her high school sweetheart, Sammie L. McDuffie, who preceded her in death. She was the Proud Mother of five children, Affectionate Grandmother of nine, Loving Step-Grandmother of seven and Adoring Great-Grandmother of thirteen. She truly loved her baby sister, and they were inseparable. Family meant everything to her, and she would do anything within her power to make sure she provided for and protected her loved ones. Laura volunteered countless hours for community based organizations such as: Project S.O.C.K. (Saving Our Community & Kids), SWAA (Sweetwater Athletic Association); Westcoast and the Mary Lena Gibbs Community Center.
The legacy of her life will be cherished by her Daughters, Genell M. Mills, Deborah F. Hendon (Marvin, Sr.) and Gail S. Williams; Sons, Glenn Moore (Dana) and LaPrince A. Campbell; Grandsons, Gary Lee Mills, II, Guyron L. Mills, Trenton G. Cherry and Marvin K. Hendon, II; Grandaughters, Tira L. Moore, Genay L. Mills, Kaveecia L. Moore, Ramona G. Jacobs and Diesi A. Hendon; Great-Grandsons; Gary L. Mills, III, Austin L. Mills, Rijhon Belvin, Marvin K. Hendin, III, Reign Jacobs, Cayson L. Posey and Jack L. Mills; Great-Granddaughters, Geordin L. Mills, Ahmaria Mills, Jada L. Mills, Annjir Belvin, Mariah Hendon and Najir Belvin; Sister, Mrs. Ruby R. George; Brother-in-law, Mr. Russel McDuffie (Carrie) and Sister-in-law, Mrs. Louise Moore; Long- time friend, Mrs. Willie Pearl McRant and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends.
A visitation will be held Friday, January 13, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073. A funeral service will be held Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2538 Firestone Road, Jacksonville, FL 32210.
