Deacon Lawton Edward Davis, Sr. “Sonny” was born on June 20, 1948, in Graniteville, SC, to his loving parents, Lawton H. and Evelean Davis. He attended Schofield Elementary School and at the age of 11, he moved to Jacksonville, FL, where he attended Matthew Gilbert Jr. and Sr. High School. He graduated and received his diploma in 1966. Deacon Davis worked at May Cohens department store for several years, then served in the United States Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1969. Deacon Davis was united in holy matrimony to his longtime sweetheart, Shirley Heath, on December 20, 1969, at Triumph The Church and Kingdom of God In Christ in Jacksonville. To this union were born three sons, Lawton Edward Jr., Sheldon Martinez and Armand Kareem.
Deacon Davis worked for the Seaboard Coastline Railroad from 1978 to 1984. He worked and retired from the Duval County School Board as lead custodian. Deacon Davis was a man who worked and provided for his family with great passion and vigor.
He was preceded in death by his father, Lawton H. Davis; brother, Rev. Paul D. Davis, and sister, Dr. Mary Lindsey Lewis.
Deacon Davis is survived by his devoted wife, Shirley Heath Davis; mother, Evelean Davis; three sons, Lawton Jr., Sheldon Sr. “Natalac” (Tiffney) and Armand (Tamara); five grandchildren, Khalilah, Lawton III, Shirley, Sheldon Jr. and Layla; great-grandchild, Josiah; five sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; one aunt; one uncle; a host of other relatives and friends and his Trumpet In Zion Fellowship Family.
