Luz Minerva Mendez

Luz Minerva Mendez - dedicated daughter, sister, aunt, and friend of many - passed away on October 8, 2022 at the age of 63 in Jacksonville, FL.

Luz Minerva was born in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. She graduated from college as a legal secretary and worked for many years as a legal aid to a federal judge in Puerto Rico. 

In 2005, she moved to Jacksonville where she worked for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel. Shortly after moving to Jacksonville, she met her loving boyfriend Aaron G. Baety, a good and kind man with whom she was united for 10 years until his untimely death in October 22, 2015.

Over the next years, she relocated to Atlanta, GA and Greensboro, NC to work for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel.  

In 2014 she moved back to Jacksonville and in 2018 retired as the Office Manager for the IRS Office of Chief Counsel headquarters after 34 years of dedicated and tireless hard work for the federal government.

Through the years, Luz Minerva enjoyed traveling, and making friends wherever she went. She loved to go to the beach very early in the morning to watch the sunrise and walk. She enjoyed staying in contact with her friends by phone and sending the traditional New Year calendar to her list of family and friends.

Luz Minerva was authentically and wholeheartedly there for those in her life. She will be remembered fondly as the central pillar of her family who brought reason and some spice in all her loving attempts to advise and organize all those who relied upon her so deeply. Her legion of close friends will miss her profound loyalty, laughter and so much more.  And her former employees, coworkers, and supervisors from across the country and Puerto Rico, continue to value how much she supported them and always tried to make their lives better.  Every workplace Luz Minerva graced was better for her contributions.

Luz Minerva was preceded in death by her father, Raimundo Mendez-Borges.

She is survived by her mother, Antonia Hernandez-Acevedo; brother, Reinaldo Mendez, and sisters, Melba Mendez and Maria A. Mendez; nephews, Eduardo Guadalupe (Carmen Santiago), Reinaldo Mendez-Correa, Sebastian Mendez; nieces, Jackeline Similia (Frank) and Melissa Guadalupe; great nephews and nieces, Natasha Guadalupe, Nashali Guadalupe, Sid Junelis Guadalupe, Marcelo A. Similia, Giulietta L. Similia; Cristian Nuñez, and Sebastian Rivera.

In her memory, donations can be made to her favorite charity Family Promise of Jacksonville (https://familypromisejax.org/)  and to Community Hospice & Palliative Care (https://www.communityhospice.com/foundation/memorial-giving/donation/)  for the loving and professional care she received in her last days.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073 starting with a visitation at 2:00 p.m. followed by the memorial service at 2:30 p.m.

Luz Minerva Méndez, dedicada hija, hermana, tía y amiga de muchos, falleció el 8 de octubre de 2022 a la edad de 63 años en Jacksonville, FL.

Luz Minerva nació en Río Piedras, Puerto Rico. Se graduó de la universidad como secretaria legal y trabajó durante muchos años como asistente legal de un juez federal en Puerto Rico.

En 2005, se mudó a Jacksonville, donde trabajó para la Oficina del Asesor Jurídico del IRS. Poco después de mudarse a Jacksonville, conoció a su amado novio Aaron G. Baety, un hombre bueno y amable con quien estuvo unida durante 10 años hasta su prematura muerte el 22 de octubre de 2015.

Durante los años siguientes, se mudó a Atlanta, GA y Greensboro, NC para trabajar en la Oficina del Asesor Jurídico del IRS.

En 2014, regresó a Jacksonville y en 2018 se jubiló como gerente de oficina de la Oficina del Asesor Jurídico del IRS después de 34 años de de trabajo arduo, dedicado e incansable para el gobierno federal.

A través de los años, Luz Minerva disfrutó viajar y hacer amigos donde quiera que fuera. Le encantaba ir a la playa muy temprano en la mañana para ver el amanecer y caminar. Le gustaba estar en contacto con sus amigos por teléfono y enviar el tradicional calendario de Año Nuevo a su lista de familiares y amigos.

Luz Minerva fue auténtica y se dio de todo corazón para los que estaban en su vida. Será recordada con cariño como el pilar central de su familia que aportó razón y algo de sabor a todos sus intentos cariñosos  de asesorar y organizar a todos aquellos que confiaban profundamente en ella. Su legión de amigos cercanos extrañarán su profunda lealtad, risas y mucho más. Y sus ex empleados, compañeros de trabajo y supervisores en Estados Unidos y Puerto Rico, continúan valorando cuánto los apoyó y siempre trató de mejorar sus vidas. Cada lugar de trabajo que Luz Minerva visitó fue mejor por sus contribuciones.

A Luz Minerva le precedió en la muerte su padre, Raimundo Méndez-Borges.

Le sobreviven su madre, Antonia Hernandez-Acevedo; hermano, Reinaldo Méndez, y hermanas, Melba Méndez y María A. Méndez; sobrinos, Eduardo Guadalupe (Carmen Santiago), Reinaldo Méndez-Correa, Sebastián Méndez; sobrinas, Jackeline Similia (Frank) y Melissa Guadalupe; sobrinos nietos, Natasha Guadalupe, Nashali Guadalupe, Sid Junelis Guadalupe, Marcelo A. Similia, Giulietta L. Similia; Cristian Núñez y Sebastián Rivera.

Se llevará a cabo un acto de recordacion el sábado 29 de octubre de 2022 en Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073, comenzando con visitacion a las 2:00 p.m. y seguido por un acto de recordacion a las 2:30 p.m.
