Richard Charles Davis, LCDR Ret. United States Navy, 89, died of natural causes on July 15, 2023. He was born on April 1, 1934, in Seneca Falls, NY to the late Richard “Arthur” and Ruth Davis. Richard grew up as a farm boy on a wine farm. He earned an associate degree then joined the U.S. Navy serving over 22 years retiring in May 1975.
He entered the Aviation program and earned his wings in Pensacola, FL. He flew both the FJ Fury and the F8U Crusader aircraft. In the early 60’s, he attended the advanced weapons school which is now known as “Top Gun”. In the late 60’s, he was transferred to Navy Intelligence where he earned a Navy accommodation for his work on the US Pueblo.
After retiring from the Navy, he spent 44 plus years, of his own time, working with the NOL at NAS Jax, a little league baseball program. Due to his dedication to this program, the major league field was permanently named Richard Davis field. He had also earned his master’s degree.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years Joanne and great-grandson Jaxon.
Richard is survived by his loving wife of ten years Erma Lanier Davis; son, Michael (Caroline); grandchildren, Danielle, Richard, Brandon, Jaclyn; daughter, Margaret (Michael); grandchildren, Matthew (Savannah) Mackenzie and Megan (Josh), and three grandchildren, Eleanor, Avery and Xander; stepdaughter, Rhonda Clarke (Craig); step grandchildren, Roni Ford and Austin Clarke.
