In Loving Memory of Richard K. Maurer
September 7, 1944 – December 1, 2024
It is with a mix of love and sadness that we announce the passing of Richard K. Maurer, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, neighbor, and loyal fan of coffee, chocolate milk, pretzels, and FOX News. Richard peacefully departed this life on December 1, 2024, at the age of 80, surrounded by his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and a well-worn lawn mower.
Richard was born on September 7, 1944, as the cherished only child of Harold and Gertrude Maurer in New York City. Raised in The Bronx, Richard spent his childhood embracing the vibrant energy of the city he loved. Summers at Rockaway Beach added a special rhythm to his early years, where he enjoyed the sun, the Sugar Bowl, and lifelong friendships.
Though he left New York at the age of 18 to pursue a career in the United States Air Force, his heart never truly did. He held an enduring admiration for the Big Apple, relishing its energy, iconic landmarks like the Empire State Building, and its culinary delights, especially cheesecake and classic New York-style pizza. Richard’s love for the city was as vast as its skyline, a sentiment that stayed with him throughout his life and shaped the stories he shared with family and friends.
Richard embraced life with a zest for simple pleasures. His mornings began with a strong cup of coffee and the Today show. Afternoons often featured a large glass of chocolate milk—because why not? He was a connoisseur of news commentary, faithfully watching FOX News while offering his own colorful insights from the comfort of his recliner.
Richard’s love of cooking was legendary. Whether perfecting a recipe, experimenting with new flavors, or baking treats for family and friends, his kitchen was always filled with love and delicious aromas. He had an undeniable talent for bringing people together around food, and his recipes will live on in the hearts (and cookbooks) of his loved ones.
When Richard wasn’t busy perfecting his lawn or someone else’s, he could be found behind the wheel of his faded, battle-hardened, 23-year-old Ford Expedition. That trusty vehicle, though long past its prime, held countless memories, miles, and a lot of duct tape—a true symbol of his practicality and resourcefulness, much like the man himself.
Richard’s commitment to his community extended beyond his own yard. As HOA President and a dedicated member holding multiple roles on the HOA board, he took immense pride in maintaining the neighborhood's entryways, ensuring they were always welcoming and well-kept. Whether planting flowers, trimming hedges, or simply lending his expertise, Richard’s care for his community left a lasting mark that will not be forgotten.
Richard was many things—an Air Force veteran, a skilled cook, a proud father, a mediocre fisherman, a collector of silly socks, and a die-hard music lover who believed every road trip deserved a 1950s soundtrack. With his good-natured humor and talent for turning ordinary moments into cherished memories, he brought laughter and joy wherever he went.
He was preceded in death by his parents and is survived by his ever-patient and loving wife, Xcynthia (Ann); his children, Richard Maurer (Pamela), Kimberly (Maurer) Stansbury (Leslie), Theresa (Maurer) Humphrey (Brian), and Cynthia (Maurer) Koziolek (Edward); his grandchildren, Ethan Humphrey (Miranda), Justin Humphrey (Kelsey), Kathleen Maurer, Kristine Maurer, Kaylin Maurer, Hannah (Koziolek) Rodriguez (Dillon), Michael Koziolek (Desire), Matthew Koziolek (Kelsee), Seth Koziolek, and Tyler Stansbury; and his beloved great-grandchildren, Rosalina and Violet Koziolek.
A celebration of his remarkable life will be held on December 14, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home, 529 Kingsley Avenue, Orange Park, Florida 32073. At a later date, interment with military honors will be at Jacksonville National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly encourages donations to The American Cancer Society. The family would also like to extend their gratitude to Kindred North Hospital for their outstanding care and support during Richard’s time with them. Rest easy, Papa. May your lawns always be neatly trimmed, your chocolate milk always cold, your recipes always celebrated, and your Expedition forever cruising the highways of heaven.
