Richard "Dick" May Obituary

Richard “Dick” Hobert May, 79, passed away on March 15, 2023, in Orange Park, Florida. He was born on October 20, 1943, in Jacksonville, Florida, to the late Hobert May and Carolyn(Grissett) May.

Dick was a man of many interests and passionate about them all. He grew up in a military family and traveled to new duty posts every two years. He started school in Guam and a later tour duty found him back in Guam where he graduated high School. He attended several colleges, North Texas University, Florida State University and the University of Virginia Law School. Dick was a practicing Attorney for forty-five years which included, General Practice, Mediator and Pro Bono work. He attended the Episcopal Church. Dick also served in the United States Navy, USS Alcor and the Naval Reserves.

His zest for learning was ever present and his many passions included music, fishing, boating, cooking and travel. Having played trombone in high school, he also played guitar and banjo. He liked all kinds of music, serenading us with many a song. Food and cooking was always something Dick was involved with, enjoyed and was quite good. Proof of this is the many pictures of food. Some of his hobbies included rehabbing a trawler and “Plan B”, a sailboat named Girtie named after his grandmother. He never shied away from a project and was quick to help others with their projects. His love of people was evident by many friends and he always loved and had time for great conversation. Dick will be remembered for his unpretentiousness, his infectious laughter that came from the soul, a great two-stepper and no one can forget his trademark, “hats.” A man with “gusto for life.”

Preceding Dick in death are his parents and grandparents.

Left to cherish Dick’s memory are his loving wife, Christine “Chris” May; children, Douglas May, Stephanie Avery, Kimberly Atwell and step-son, Christopher Doying; grandchildren, Lily Atwell, Ava Atwell, Liam Avery and Lucinda Avery; brother, Marshall May; sisters, Barbara May Clower (Ronald) and Karen May; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
