Roberta Harkey Obituary

Roberta W. Harkey

April 6, 1941 – October 31, 2022

Roberta W. Harkey, 81, of Orange Park passed away at her home on Monday, October 31, 2022.

Roberta was born in New York, New York on April 6, 1941, to George and Eleanor Wollmers but has lived in Orange Park for the past 45 years.

She graduated in 1959, Cum Laude, from Bishop Kenny High School. Upon graduation, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York where she earned her AA Degree in Apparel Design. She went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in Home Economics Education from Florida State University as well as earning her Master of Social Work Degree.

She was also a very active member of Grace Episcopal Church in Orange Park before joining New Grace Church in Fleming Island where her degree in apparel design allowed her the ability to create most of the Church banners that hang proudly for all to see.  It was Roberta’s commitment to her faith that led her to volunteer and work for many Charitable organizations throughout her life.

Roberta worked at Catholic Charities as a Counselor/Case Worker for unwed mothers and conducted adoption home studies. In 1989 she went to work for the Duval County School Board as a social worker. In doing so, she was presented with an opportunity to become a Case Coordinator/Volunteer Supervisor for the Guardian Ad Litem program. Roberta was extremely passionate about children’s representation in the Court System, their safety and well- being.  She was not afraid to think outside of the legal box, push the envelope or go out on a limb to ensure at risk children had someone in their corner who could speak on their behalf.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William Clifford Harkey in 2008 and her son, Robert Scott Harkey in 2005.

Roberta is survived by her four children; William David Harkey, and his wife, Sheri Williamson Harkey, Edward Eugene Harkey and his wife, Fabiola Castro Harkey, Leah Harkey Dienger and her fiancé, David Pewitt and Raychael Lynn Harkey along with her grandchildren, Austin Dienger, Zachary Dienger, and his wife, Samantha Dienger, Jacob Dienger, Christian Harkey, Cameron Harkey, and his fiancé, Rachel Tuner, Anabella Harkey and great granddaughter, Dallas Dienger.

Roberta’s kindness and compassion has touched and changed so many people’s lives. She will forever be remembered for her love of family, commitment to her faith and most of all, her tenacity and feistiness!
