Shirley Vaughan Obituary

Shirley Delores Vaughan was born on June 28, 1937, to the late Cornelius and Nancy Thompson. Her long and well-lived life was spent here in Jacksonville Florida, culminating in her peaceful homegoing on September 24, 2021.

Shirley enjoyed working at Bell South until her retirement, after which she enjoyed working for a time at CFS, also here in Jacksonville. Her church affiliations included First Baptist Church of Oakland and Shiloh Baptist Church, where she has been a member for the past 15 years.

Her life was anchored by her children and grandchildren. She was always fully present and ready to guide with as much love and strength as she could muster. There wasn’t a milestone missed. Her smiling face and caring spirit attended every birthday celebration, graduation, and wedding. She loved seeing her kids grow and thrive, and she lived for the many grandchildren and great grandchildren who carry on the legacy of her family. Nothing gave her greater joy than spending time with them at Cheesecake Factory, which was her favorite, or at The Alhambra Dinner Theater. Surrounding her family with love was her life’s purpose. She relished every moment.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Orvile Vaughan, and her two brothers, Paul Thompson and Karl Thompson.

Shirley is survived by her lovely children, Patrice Henderson, Lydia Vaughan, Martin Vaughan and Shawn Vaughan;
her grandchildren, Tondricka Sopenasky (Nichols), Abram Henderson (Toddy), Isaac Henderson, Joseph Henderson, Kobi Vaughan, Aryton Vaughan, Kayla Vaughan, Jordan Vaughan, Kenya Johnson, Kristin Teamer, Latoya “Chloe” Vaughan, K. Vaughan, Shawn John Vaughan, Tyler Vaughan, and Keshawn Vaughan. Shirley’s great-grandchildren include Nazir Sopenasky, Jayden Sopenasky, Kobi Vaughan, Jr., Kyrie Vaughan, Abram Henderson IV, Andrew Henderson, Byron Johnson, Jr., Tyler Vaughan, Jr. and Landon Vaughan.

Additional surviving family members include her sisters, Cecelia Miller (Hubert) and Theresa Glasper; her brothers, Javan Thompson and Corey Thompson; nephews and nieces include Corey Thompson, Paul Thompson, Mark Thompson, Vincent Miller, Paul Miller, Reginald (Al) Silas, Nicolle Miller, Erica Miller, Yakara Thompson, Barbara Jean Burch, Mimi (Michele) Wilson, Tangena Monts, Eilene Erickson, Damisha Campbell and Soleil Miller.
