Thomas Mathis Obituary

Thomas Maxwell Mathis passed away on July 26, 2021 in Middleburg FL. He was born on June 3, 1949 in Melbourne, FL, to the late Thomas Facyson Mathis and Louvenia Taylor.

Tom graduated from Dunbar High School in Ft. Myers and was elected class president. He served in the U.S. Army from June 1968 to July 1977, achieving the rank of E-5, and earned an honorable discharge. While serving his country, Tom is most notable for being a Vietnam War veteran. He went on to become an airplane mechanic for Northrop Grumman in St. Augustine for six years. Next, he worked for Gwen’s Landscaping in Jacksonville as a landscape technician.

Tom was well known for his great character and amazing cooking abilities. When Tom became disabled in 1995, he took over all of the household duties and responsibilities to make sure his family was taken care of while his wife worked. Tom made sure his kids were dressed and on time for school every day. Tom’s roles were not over when his children were grown. He cared daily for his autistic grandson. He was a selfless man who bent over backwards for everyone he encountered, earning lifelong friendships. Tom was an avid card player with spades being his game of choice.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Malvenia Raggins.
