The life of Jessie Mae Johnson Hicks began on October 19, 1928 in Monroe County (Perdue Hill) Alabama. She was the sixth of nine children. Her sojourn on earth ended peacefully at her home on Thursday, May 4, 2017.
She was educated in the public schools of Cleburne County, Alabama. Mom loved her church, joining the Greater Friendly Missionary Baptist Church in 1965. As a member, she served on Usher Board #1 and #2, serving as Vice President for years. She also was a member of the City Wide Ushers Union. Other affiliations’ included her membership with the “Pride of East #19 Order of the Eastern Star” for 15 years.
She was preceded in death by her oldest daughter, Ceola Mildred Wallace, and youngest daughter, Regina Diane Hicks.
She leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Yvonne Hicks, Viola Hicks McGriff, Patricia Hicks Rogers (Michael), William "Billy" Hicks Jr., Joseph Elliott Hicks and Rosylin Hicks-Kimbrough. Family also includes grandchildren: Pamela Sanders, Elder Joseph Sanders Jr. (Darly), Jeffery "Bo" Sanders, Cassandra Lovett (Tim), Craig Lamont Hicks, Christopher Linton, Allaric McGriff (Shonda), Tafney McGriff, Richard James Green Jr. (deceased), Jeanetta Mobley (Kenneth), Angela Hicks (deceased), Jessica Hicks, Natashia Hicks, James "BJ" Hollaway, Melissa Cummings, Joseph Hicks Jr. (Kari), Kiyana Sampson and Jason Hicks; and a host of great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, May 12, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and the funeral service on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., both at Greater Friendly Missionary Baptist Church, 1721 W. 19th Street, Jacksonville, FL 32209, Senior Pastor, Rev. Dr. Jarvis Bracy.
